The Difference Between Depression And A Mental Illness

Depression is a mental state in which the individual feels so depressed that he or she loses all interest in living. People suffering from this mental state are not capable of doing anything and even fails to perform even the most simple tasks. The only way to treat depression is to get to the root cause and find out how to cure it. Some people might point fingers at the family members as the cause of depression, or they might blame the work load of the sufferer or any other external factors for the mental disorder, but whatever be the reason, if depression is left unattended, it might result in worse conditions.

It is not compulsory to diagnose the depression by visiting a medical practitioner and taking the patient to a specialist for a double check up, but the truth is that a medical examination always helps in identifying the exact cause of the depression. In fact, this is the only way to treat the depression. Once the cause is identified, the sufferer should start undergoing treatment for the mental illness. There are many ways of treating depression; depending upon the severity of the disorder, the type of the depression and the family member who is suffering from the depression.

The first step in treating the depression is to find out the exact cause. In most cases, the family member responsible for the depression has some sort of medication that causes the depression. This might be a particular food or a special kind of medicine. If this is the case, then it becomes easier to change the diet and medication that are prescribed in conjunction with the depression treatment so that it no longer affects the person's body.

It is also advisable to ask the doctor to prescribe an alternative form of medication. Alternative forms of medication like herbal medicines might be more effective than the one that the doctor prescribes because they do not have side effects. They are very much safe and have no contraindications. But before taking any medication, it is advisable to consult a doctor and thoroughly discuss the possible benefits and drawbacks of the drug. Sometimes, even the doctor himself might prescribe alternative form of medication to treat the disease.

Another way of treating the depression is through therapy. In the therapy session, the family member who suffers from the depression will talk to the person affected by the mental illness and convince him to get rid of the depression. The person might not agree with the idea of going through a therapy session. But if he feels the importance of it and realizes that he cannot do something about his depression on his own, then he might be persuaded to undergo the therapy sessions.

A third way of treating the depression is through the use of antidepressants. Antidepressants are usually prescribed by the doctor. They work by trying to balance the levels of the serotonin in the brain. Serotonin is an important chemical in the brain that influences the mood swings and other symptoms of depression. Some of the common medications used for treating depression are selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), tricyclic antidepressants and monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs).

Natural remedies are also available. These remedies can either be a substitute to the regular medication or act as an add-on to the regular treatment. They can be used to treat the depression without having to take the medication. If your family member suffering from depression does not respond well to the usual medication, then natural remedies might be suggested to him. You should discuss with him the options available and help him realize which one would be the best in his case.

Remember that depression is a mental illness and is not a physical disease. In order to cure the depression, the mind has to be healed. There are many ways to treat the depression such as natural remedies, medications and therapy. You should always seek proper medical advice to know the options available for treating your family member suffering from depression.
