Signs of Depression in Teenagers

sign of depression teenager

If your teenager has been diagnosed with depression, it may be time to seek out some signs of depression. Signs of depression in a teenager are different than signs of depression in adults and adolescents. This is because many of the signs of depression in adolescents are common in teens. Teenagers have normal ups and downs during their teen years. When you are able to recognize the signs of depression in a teenager, you will have a better understanding of what is going on with your teenager.

A teenager may be irritable or have difficulty talking. This is often a result of stress that they may be experiencing in their lives. Your teenager may also seem to be very moody and not have any common sense when it comes to emotions. There may be changes in their sleep patterns as well. These are all signs of emotional disturbance that can make it difficult for them to function normally.

If you have questions about your teenager's moods and whether or not they are a victim of depression, you need to talk with them about it. At times, you can find clues to depression without even knowing that your teen is going through a problem. You want to make sure that you know what is going on with your teen and in order to identify the signs of depression, you need to know the signs first.

Some signs of depression that you may be able to notice in your teenager include becoming distant from you. They may seem to be preoccupied with their school work instead of spending much time with you. When you are with your teenager, there is an aura of sadness or no interest at all.

A teenager also tends to turn to alcohol and drugs to try to relax. They may use this as an escape. Changes in weight are also another sign of depression. Weight gain is often connected to a lack of exercise. This lack of physical activity will cause your teenager to become overweight.

If your teenager is withdrawing from you, then they may have depression. When you are around your teenager, it is important to be supportive and try to calm down. You may want to bring up topics that bring up happy memories. If your teenager seems to be unhappy, then they may have difficulty talking about their problems. When they do talk, you need to make sure that they know to keep their emotions in check when talking. Talking about sadness or other negative feelings can only make things worse.

A sign of depression in your teenager may also be the opposite. They may be very happy and talk about everything. It is very easy to point the finger of blame at them and tell them that they are to blame for their problems with depression. This is when it becomes crucial that you talk to your teenager and try to determine if there is anything that they can do to change themselves.

If you are not comfortable pointing fingers at your teenager, then you may want to consider seeing a medical professional. You should never wait for depression to hit before taking action. It is important to be proactive about treating depression in order to make sure that your teen is happy. While there is no single sign of depression that will apply to every teenager, you can take action now to find out if you have a problem on your hand. Depression in teenagers is a serious issue that must be dealt with if you want to maintain a happy relationship with your teenager.

Testing for Depression

As a child of the eighties, I remember my parents' excitement over the idea of testing for depression in adults. The thought of taking a pill every day to "make me feel good," was a far more attractive option than the prescription drugs my parents were taking. I grew up with parents who could never imagine themselves as adults. In my mind, their adult emotions had to be somehow "determined" by some mental process that could never be completely understood by the average person. So they put aside their qualms about the use of psychiatric medications, and enjoyed the benefits of their choice. Today, I am an adult who have had "the experience" of having "depressed feelings," but not necessarily experienced the debilitating episodes of depression that my parents' generation did. Today, I have learned how to "cope." Through a course of prescribed medication and therapy, I have discovered how to treat depression, and I no longer take...
